VERMONT // A Track-By-Track Guide To Their EP "Mature Minds For Overzealous Kids"

Vocalist Josh Swanwick from Melbourne emo-rock band Vermont has broken down the bands Forthcoming EP track-by-track which is due to drop this Friday the 15th of July. So keep on reading to get a glimpse of "Mature Minds For Overzealous Kids" through the eyes of the band!

Our latest EP, ‘Mature Minds For Overzealous Kids’, came to be at a rather funny time in all our lives. The songs were the product of boredom, self loathing and the need to find a way to express how we’ve all been feeling through the last few years navigating a pandemic. This EP has been a 2 year process, starting with the 20 odd demos that we chopped down and refined between moments of freedom to then finding the right person to make this vision a reality. This record is an evolution of the Vermont sound we have been working towards, and a homage to our emotive, heart-on-sleeve lyricism we have made our own .

The first track from this release, Over Our Head, was always going to feature as a single. The push for a punkier and more aggressive track with a huge chorus to match helped to create the idea that we weren’t scared to experiment with the heavy genre. Plus the funky second verse keeps things interesting. The intro line was thanks to Nath, who was doodling away during a writing session and the line just stuck.

The second track, Loathe, is more in line with the Vermont sound people are mostly familiar with

but just a bit more refined. Just another heartfelt track to hit you in the feels with all the ambiance to get you feeling angsty with the raw guitars.

Headlights was always going to be the single off of this release. It is undeniably the stand out for this EP. Exploring more heavier elements of this genre by throwing in some screams and breakdowns was always going to be the direction for this track. It just gets you going and ready to go!

Numb is our latest single of this EP was one we questioned until the end when we finally decided. In the past, our more somber, emotional and slower tracks have proven to us that not every single has to be upbeat or in your face. This is a melancholic ballad of heartache, sadness and anxiety wrapped up in an explosive rock track. The “solo” section of this track was a fun one as we battled to figure out what to put in there - plus cabin fever was setting in at this stage in the studio. But ultimately, we’re super happy with the more emotive and expressive exploration.

Memories, like our first track, was also the introduction of a melding of punk elements against heavier elements like the breakdown-ish pre-chorus sections. The chanty lyrics within the bridge and ending chorus was a nice touch too. This one explores a more positive and hopeful outlook on an experience that one of us faced, championed by the idea of doing what it takes to make things work through the thick and thin of it all.

Our last track, Faceless, was an exploration into a more electronic sound with the use of synth bass and drums. The guitar work for this track made the choruses feel huge as if being punched in the face with raw emotion. This one explores more issues around anxiety and depression as many of us have gone and are still going through. The chorus for this one really encapsulated the overall tone of this song while the bridge section shows a glimmer of hope that one might find during times like these.

This whole release was thanks to Sam Bassal of Ocean Grove who helped us to push these 6 songs into the tracks you hear today. His use of production really gave this the flair and polish that we have been striving for. Overall, we came into this release with the idea of bringing a more relaxed and fun outlook towards all things Vermont related. And honestly, we just wanted to portray a sense of a good time no matter what, while still maintaining our emotive side, one that we have come to champion over the years.
